Basic website terminology from A to Z for non-professionals

You often hear about websites, or more broadly, website design, however, to understand and grasp websites, you need to master basic website terminology.

1. Domain (domain name)

The first and quite important part when building a website is the domain name. So what is a domain name? A website must have a domain name, the domain name is the website address. Domain names often have many forms such as: www.unikery.com, www.def.net,www.adsmo.vn,..

Other small concepts related to domain names include:

• URL: URL stands for “Universal Resource Locator” which means the path or address used to refer to resources on the internet. Every resource stored on the internet has its own address, those addresses are called “URL paths”.
• IP: IP stands for Internet Protocol which means the protocol address of the internet, it is similar to your home address. Hardware devices in the network that want to connect and communicate with each other must have an IP address.
• DNS: is an abbreviation for the term “Domain Name System” which means a domain name solution system. DNS was born in 1984 for the Internet, only a system that allows the corresponding establishment between IP addresses and domain names.

2. Website Hosting (Web Hosting)

Web hosting is where all information, documents, and images of the website are stored on an internet server. This is also where all transactions and information exchanges between businesses and customers take place. Simply put, Web hosting is like your company’s office in real life. When you rent a web hosting, it’s like renting an office on the internet.

Notes when using web hosting:

– The server running the Web service must have a large enough configuration and high-speed transmission line to ensure smooth processing, serve a large number of visitors and avoid data congestion.

– Support programming languages as well as databases or pre-written tools to serve website transaction activities such as sending emails, uploading via website, managing products, news…

– The server needs to be cared for, maintained, and updated regularly to avoid technical and security risks.

– Web Hosting as mentioned above is basically like renting an office on the internet, so your storage capacity is the same as the office area. You need to have a large enough capacity (in GB) to store all the information, data, and images of the website.

– Bandwidth is also an issue to note. Bandwidth needs to be large enough to serve the transaction and information exchange activities of the website.

3. What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which is a file transfer protocol on the Internet. FTP requires two computers to operate: a server and a client.

The FTP server is used to provide FTP services to respond to service requests from other computers on the network.

The FTP client is for service users, initiating a connection with the server.

4. Other common basic terms in web programming

• PHP: is an abbreviation for Personal Home Page, a programming language Open source scripts are commonly used to create web applications running on servers. With the advantages of being powerful, easy to write, easy to use, and easy to develop. Along with the MySQL database, PHP has become a popular web programming language at the present time.
• ASP: also known as Active Server Pages – a Microsoft solution for producing dynamic content for websites. ASP runs on Windows servers, often using Access databases. Targeting office application objects.
• ASP.NET: is a great “successor” to ASP. ASP.NET is an open source server-side web application framework, designed to allow developers to build websites, applications and mobile services. The reason ASP.NET is called a great successor is because ASP.NET supports code written in compiled languages such as Visual Basic, C++, C#, and Perl. It is supported for editing on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Docker operating systems.
• Laravel: is a free and open source PHP framework, developed with the aim of supporting the development of web applications based on the MVC (Model – View – Controller) model
• Python: is a high-level programming language for general-purpose programming purposes. Python has the advantage of being easy to read, easy to learn and easy to remember. Python is a language with a clear structure, convenient for beginners to learn programming. Python is developed to run on Unix, MS-DOS, Mac OS, OS/2, Windows, Linux.
