KPI, or “Key Performance Indicator,” is an important term in the field of management and business. In this article, we will learn about the concept of what KPI is and the role of KPI in evaluating and measuring performance in organizations and businesses.
WHAT IS KPI?
KPI stands for “Key Performance Indicator,” which means “Key Performance Indicator” in Vietnamese. These are important indicators or criteria used to measure and evaluate the performance of an activity, a project, or an organization.
Each business or organization may have separate KPIs based on their specific goals and strategies. KPIs can include a variety of metrics, metrics, or data analysis to measure performance in a variety of areas, including marketing, finance, manufacturing, projects, and many other aspects of business operations.
THE ROLE OF KPIS IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
KPI (Key Performance Indicator) plays an important role in human resource management by providing a specific and directional way to measure, track, and evaluate employee performance. Here are some of the main roles of KPI in human resource management:
- Measure individual performance: KPI allows managers to determine the level of work completion and contribution of each employee to the organization’s goals. This helps create a clear picture of who is performing well and who needs improvement.
- Set specific goals: KPIs help set specific goals for each employee, workgroup or department. This helps focus on important tasks and helps employees know what they need to achieve.
- Track progress: By using KPIs, managers can track the daily work progress of employees. This helps to detect problems early and support employees to improve performance if needed.
- Identify training and development opportunities: KPIs can help identify the skills and competencies required for each job position. Based on KPIs, managers can recommend appropriate training and development courses to enhance employee capabilities.
- Evaluate organizational performance: KPIs are not only used to measure individual performance but also to evaluate the overall performance of the organization. This helps managers identify areas where the organization needs to improve to achieve strategic goals.
- Promoting healthy competition: KPIs encourage healthy competition between employees and departments. This can promote innovation, creativity and improve organizational performance.
PROCESS OF BUILDING EFFECTIVE HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT KPIs
The process of building human resource management KPIs is one of the important tools to evaluate the performance of employees, departments and the entire enterprise. Human resource management KPIs also help leaders make strategic decisions, development plans and improve human resource capacity.
According to my research results, there are many ways to build a KPI evaluation process for each employee, but one of the popular and effective ways is to apply the SMART tool (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to determine KPI indicators. Here are some basic steps to build this process:
- Step 1: Identify the department and person who builds KPIs. It can be senior leaders, department leaders or employees who propose KPIs for their work.
- Step 2: Identify KPIs using the SMART tool. KPIs must be clear, feasible, measurable, realistic and have a specific deadline.
- Step 3: Apply and evaluate the level of completion of KPIs. Human resource management software can be used to support accurate and transparent monitoring and evaluation of KPIs.
- Step 4: Evaluate KPIs and calculate bonuses. You can base on criteria such as: KPI completion level, work quality, work impact on the business, etc. to determine the bonus level for each employee.
- Step 5: Adjust and optimize KPIs to match actual work completion. You can base on the KPI evaluation results to adjust KPIs to match human resource capacity, business conditions and market requirements.
KPIs are a powerful support tool in corporate human resource management activities. Depending on each department and position, the KPI criteria will be adjusted appropriately to achieve the goal of human resource management. Hopefully, with the above article, readers will better understand what KPI is.
